What is Food Pharmacy?

How It Works:

If physicians can prescribe more than $300B in prescriptions drugs per year, at what point can we begin to prescribe food to prevent, not treat, disease? Food Pharmacy is a community-based approach for treating and preventing diet-related illnesses by helping patients realize that they have the power to improve their own lives. Although pharmaceutical medications continue to play an important role in the practice of medicine, these drugs are rarely curative, often expensive, and their side-effects present a challenging obstacle in improving one’s quality of life.

Instead, Food Pharmacy is an option for motivated individuals looking to eat healthier and live longer, while overcoming the confusion of what constitutes a healthy diet. By enabling a process for patients to receive physician-approved food on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, we believe the concept of Food Pharmacy to be a novel, but promising approach to the modification of existing, unhealthy behavioral norms.

Why You Should Care

And How You Can Live a Healthier Life

What constitutes a “healthy diet” remains one of the most controversial and misunderstood topics in our society. Today, 68.8% of adult Americans are overweight and the 2016 US Average Life Expectancy dropped for the first time since the AIDs epidemic that exploded nearly three decades ago. It is well established that the increasing prevalence of many chronic illnesses such as type II diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease are bankrupting our healthcare system, and consequently raising insurance premiums even for those not affected by these preventable diet-related illnesses. Meanwhile, the influence of the food industry, government policy, and special interests groups further convolute what we believe to be a healthy diet. It is nice to believe that our medical doctors will be there for our rescue, but unfortunately, this is not the case. Instead, medical schools train physicians to prescribe drugs, which is evidenced by the fact that there is no required nutritional training to become a licensed physician. Nevertheless, we continue to hear physicians preach the outdated and grossly over-simplified concept of “eat fewer calories than you expend.”

Natural vs. Processed Foods
